      Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2007 18:56:35 -0500

Richard Boyd Jr., from Virginia, married Lucy Farley (1797-1881) who was
from Virginia/and Georgia 10 July 1815 in Jasper County, Georgia. Twenty
some years later they settled in Alabama. They built a house and raised
their family in the Sturkie community in Chambers County, three miles
from Boyds Tank. The home was built from hand-hewn logs and was still
standing in 1969 where it was built about 1840; today by the side of US
Highway 431. In the book "Pine Log and Greek Revival" 1964, William H.
Davidson depicts the Richard Boyd house and history. (The house was
destroyed by a tornado in April, 1969.)

There is an old legend that Richard Boyd built his house, buried his
surplus money, and died suddenly in late 1857 of a heart attack, leaving
future generations to wonder the whereabouts of the hidden treasure. In
his will Richard Boyd allotted about $1400 in cash to members of his
family. Due to his sudden passing it is not known whether the family
recovered the treasure. People of the community still talk about the
"hidden treasure" and keep a weather eye open for clues.

Lucy Boyd's brother, James Farley Jr. married Martha Boyd, the daughter
of Samuel and Elizabeth Boyd of Jasper County.

Samuel was an older brother of Richard Boyd of Sturkie. Martha later
married William H. Kimbrell of Chambers County, 26 December 1842.

The children of Richard and Lucy Boyd were:
      1. James F. Boyd, 2. Martha E. Boyd, 3. Richard W. Boyd, 4. Orey W.
Boyd, 5. Elvira Boyd, 6. John Pleasant Boyd, 7. Malissa Boyd, Susan
Boyd, 8. Celeste Bod and 9. Talitha Cumi Boyd. Talitha Cumi was the
youngest child and probably the only one born in Alabama. It is
interesting to note the orgin of the name Talitha Cumi. In St. Mark
5:41-42 records a miracle by Jesus: And he took the damsel by the hand,
and said unto her, Talitha Cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I
say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked."

      1. James F. Boyd, born in Georga about the year 1817, died in Chambers
County early in 1856 just before Richard Boyd made his will dated April
2, 1856. James married Martha Winston in Chambers County January 6,
1842. In his will dated March 15, 1856, James mentions specifically his
mother Lucy, sister Orey and her two Taylor children. He also mentions
the two children of sister Martha E. Harkness. He honored sister Orey
"for her kind attention to me during my present and former illness."
James referred to his father as William Richard Boyd. This is the only
record we have of Richard's full name. 2. Martha E. Boyd, born at
Jackson, Georgia, May 10,820; died July 6, 1847. Martha married James W.
Harkness of Butts County, April 30, 1835. They had two children: Mary
      Ann, born May 11, 1837, and Rosanna E., born June 24, 1842. 3. Richard
      W. Boyd, born in Georgia in 1826, married Mary Ann Marshall April 12,
      1849 in Chambers County. 4. Orey W. Boyd, born in Georgia June 28, 1827;
died in Alabama May 1, 1903. Orey married 1st David Taylor in Chambers
County October 22, 1846. They had two children; Isabella Camilla (1849)
and Emma Jane (1851). Orey married 2nd William Angus Ferguson June 25,
1854. They had one child Ida C. Ferguson born 7 December 1856 died
February 22, 1860. 5. Elvira Boyd, born in Georgia in 1829 married
Daniel Taylor (b. 1827) October 22, 1846 in Chambers County. They had
four children who died young; Zachary 1848-1852, Eleazar 1852-1852,
Sally M., 1854-1858 and James 1859-1859. 6. John Pleasant Boyd, born in
Georgia in 1832 married Harriett Jane Gross (1835-1903) October 12,
1852. JOHN PLEASANT BOYD died in the Civil war. They had seven children:
